Daily QiGong Practice Monday to Friday (20 Apr 2026)

Are you wanting to engage in a daily Shibashi Qigong session, but finding that you are lacking the motivation? Do you need an accountability partner? Then join us every Monday through Friday morning at 7:00 am via Zoom. After saying a brief “good morning”, we jump straight into our daily practice. The session lasts approx 20 minutes, after which we wish each other a “lovely day” and bid “adieu”. As this is part of our “morning routine”, feel free to join wearing your comfy clothes, including pyjamas!

This suits all levels - whether you are a beginner or a seasoned Shibashi Qigong-er, as we will be following the 18 movements of Shibashi Qigong. This form of Qigong was introduced to us by Irène and she will be join us periodically for the morning sessions. Keep a lookout in the weekly newsletter for in-person sessions given by Irène.

If you are wanting to join, there is no need to register, but if you let Suzette or Rita know, we can send you an email with links to various videos. These videos show the movements and there is also a description of each movement, so you can learn the movements on your own as well as when you do them with us.

"The House of Doors " by Tan Twan Eng

The House of Doors is a work of fiction set in 1920s Penang which centers on Leslie Hamlyn, the wife of a local lawyer, and her friendship with the famed writer Somerset Maugham. As Maugham arrives at the Hamlyns' home in a state of personal and professional crisis, Leslie begins to reveal the layers of her own life and the secrets of the colonial community. The narrative threads together Leslie’s past, her involvement with the Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen, and the societal constraints of the British Empire.

The novel is a lush, atmospheric exploration of storytelling, betrayal, and the hidden lives we lead behind closed doors. Tan Twan Eng examines the morality of the colonial era and the power of literature to both preserve and distort the truth. It is a sophisticated meditation on how the stories we choose to tell and those we choose to hide, define our legacy.

Theres Crameri chose this book for us, and she will lead the discussion.

We will meet at Hotel Beau Sejour, Haldenstrasse 53, Lucerne where a charge of CHF 10.00 covers the use of the elegant salon plus a choice of either tea, coffee or water. The Hotel can be reached by buses 6 or 8 from the station (stop Europe) or by bus 24 from Meggen (stop Casino Palace). There is metered public parking opposite in front of the tennis courts.

A little interesting information about the game:

It is commonly played by four players and is a game of skill, strategy and calculation involving a degree of chance.

The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. In most variations, each player begins by receiving 13 tiles. In turn players draw and discard tiles until they complete a legal hand using the 14th drawn tile to form 4 groups (meld) and a pair (eye). There are fairly standard rules about how a piece is drawn, how a piece is robbed from another player, the use of simples (numbered tiles) and honours (winds and dragons), the kinds of melds allowed, how to deal the tiles and the order of play. Despite these similarities, there are many regional variations to the rules including rather different scoring systems, criteria for legal winning hands and even private table rules which distinguish some variations as notably different styles of Mahjong.

Let's Play Scrabble (14 May 2026)

Have you ever played the famous word game Scrabble? It is a tactical game as much as a test of vocabulary, and we play in a relaxed manner with a list of the strange but permissible two-letter words on view and the Official Scrabble Dictionary of all eligible words to consult if challenged. Up to four people can play together (we have more than one set available) and there is plenty of time to chat.

Come once as an observer and see whether you want to give it a try. We hope you will!

We will be playing in the friendly Cafe Cesar which is at the city end of the Grand National Hotel, a relaxed venue where we often have the upper part of the cafe totally to ourselves.

Japan de luxe at the Rietberg Museum

The Art of Surimono

Japan de luxe introduces Surimono, a distinctive form of Japanese woodblock prints which emerged between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries. Although Surimono literally translates to "printed things", these colour woodblock prints are far more than just that.

Artfully designed and intricately printed on high-quality hōsho paper, each work is a total work of art.

Surimono were printed in small editions of 50 to 500, intended as intimate gifts commissioned by the urban bourgeoisie. They often served as status symbols for the select group who commissioned them, reflecting society at that time.

"Burn Book" by Kara Swisher

at the Hotel Montana

Our entire membership is invited to attend. The Board will report to you the current status of our club as well as elect a new slate of officers for the coming year.

After the hour-long meeting a lovely Apero will be served.

Our membership dues will continue to be CHF 80 per year and you will be able to pay this at the meeting.

As the number of attendees have to be given to the hotel for them to set the room out and provide catering the final date for registration will be Wednesday 17 June 2026.

Memorial Day of the Battle of Sempach 1386

On Sunday, June 28th is the 640th Anniversary of the Battle of Sempach. We shall meet at 08.00 am at the Kiosk of Lucerne train station - the program in Sempach starts at 09.00 am with morning breakfast (free of charge) in the festive tent.

The conflict:

Over 600 years ago, the Habsburgs (from Austria) wanted to expand their power in Switzerland. The cities (such as Lucerne) and cantons resisted, as they wanted to remain independent.

The starting point

On July 9, 1386, the two armies met at Sempach in the canton of Lucerne. The Habsburgs had many knights who rode on horseback and carried long spears (lances). The Swiss mostly travelled on foot and only had halberds and axes.

The problem

The knights formed a wall of spears that the Swiss could not break through. The battle seemed lost.

The hero, Arnold von Winkelried: According for a well-known legend, the Swiss Arnold von Winkelried cried out "I will clear a path for you! Provide for my wife and my children!" He threw himself into the spears of the enemy, grabbed as many as possible and dragged them to the ground with him. As a result, Duke Leopold III fell in the battle, the Swiss won, which strengthened their independence from the Habsburgs.

Library and Vaulted Cellar of St. Gallen Abbey

Guided Tour

The St. Gallen Abbey Library is one of the oldest and most important libraries in the world. Its valuable collection of books documents the development of European culture and the cultural achievements of the Abbey from the 8th century until the dissolution of the abbey in 1805.

1983, the Abbey of St. Gallen, the Convent of St. John at Müstair and the Old Town of Berne were the first cultural heritage sites in Switzerland to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. A decisive factor in the choice of St. Gallen was the link between the baroque ensemble and a tradition dating back to the 8th century.

The guided tour starts at 10.30 hrs and lasts 90 minutes including the Abbey Library and Vaulted Cellar. Restaurant to be advised at a later date.

"Where the Falcon Flies" by Adam Shoalts

"Navajos Wear Nikes" by Jim Kristofic

"Go as a River " by Shelley Read

Go as a River is a work of fiction set in 1940s Colorado which follows Victoria Nash, a young woman who runs her family’s peach farm in the town of Iola. After a chance encounter with a displaced stranger, Victoria’s life is irrevocably changed, leading her to flee into the mountains to survive. The narrative follows her journey of motherhood and resilience as her hometown is eventually flooded to make way for a reservoir, forcing her to relocate her entire life.

The novel explores themes of forbidden love, the strength of the female spirit, and the displacement of people by progress. Read uses the metaphor of the river to describe the flow of time and the inevitability of change. It is a lushly written story about finding the courage to persevere when the world you knew is literally submerged.

"Indignity: A Life Reimagined " by Lea Ypi

Indignity: A Life Reimagined follows Lea Ypi’s investigation into her grandmother Leman’s life after a viral 1941 photo sparks accusations of fascist ties. Facing lost records, Ypi relies on police archives and creative reconstruction to piece together Leman’s experiences from the Ottoman Empire's collapse to communist Albania.

The book tracks Leman’s move from Greece to Tirana, marriage into a political family, and subsequent persecution under Enver Hoxha. Mixing research with fiction, Ypi examines truth, dignity, and the impacts of historical and modern scrutiny.
